THE USE OF ENGLISH SONGS TO IMPROVE THE STUDENTS’ LISTENING ABILITY

The tittle of this paper is “The use of English song to improve the students listening ability”.

This research was conducted at SMP Handayani 1 Banjaran”. the purpose of this study was to

Identify the effectiveness of English songs in improving students listening skills and to find out Student responses to the use of English song in teaching listening. The writer’s question from this Research is “Is the use of English songs effective to improve listening skills?  And what is the Student response toward the use of English song to improve listening skill? “This study used the Pre-experimental research method and then used the one group pretest- posttest- design to conduct The research. The researcher then chose 37 VIII A students as the sample for the experimental Group. The instruments used in the study were the pre-test, posttest, questionnaire. The data from Pre-test and post-test were analyzed and calculated. Based on the calculation results, the t-observer Value is 716.178. In other words, there are significant differences in scores before and after the Treatment. Therefore, the research method is effective. The results show that there is a significant Increase in students listening comprehension by using songs as a medium. Then the results of the Questionnaire showed that students gave positive responses to the use of English songs in listening Comprehension, entertained, fun and motivated. The conclusion from this study is that the application of English song in teaching listening comprehension can have a significant effect on students. This is effective in getting them interested in learning English, especially listening skill. By using English songs, they are not only able to improve their listening. So, based on the data obtained, the writers concluded that their listening comprehension increased after being taught using English songs as a medium, they were also interested and motivated in learning process. And then, choosing the right English songs really helps in improving their listening skills.
